Holiday Return Policies 2026: Deadlines at Amazon, Walmart, Target and More

Amazon and Walmart extend holiday returns to January 31, 2027. Here's every major store's 2026 deadline, the electronics exceptions and the return fees to know before you buy.

By Sophia · Updated October 30, 2026 · How this guide was put together: 2026 policies come from retailer announcements as reported by retail and local news. Where a store hasn’t announced its 2026 holiday terms yet, we show last season’s (2025) terms, as reported by CBS News, and label them clearly. We’ll update this page as stores confirm. Always check the retailer’s own returns page before you rely on a date.

Short version: Amazon and Walmart have both confirmed extended holiday returns for 2026. Eligible items bought in the holiday window can be returned until January 31, 2027. Amazon’s window covers purchases from November 1 to December 31, 2026. Walmart’s starts earlier, on October 1. Target, Best Buy, Apple and others usually announce their holiday windows in November. Last year their deadlines fell between January 8 and January 31.

The fine print matters more than the headline date. Electronics and Apple products often get a shorter window, and some stores charge return or restocking fees.

Amazon holiday return policy 2026

Most items bought on Amazon between November 1 and December 31, 2026 can be returned until January 31, 2027. Apple-brand products are the exception, with an earlier deadline of January 15. The extension covers both items sold by Amazon and items from third-party sellers fulfilled by Amazon, and Amazon has said the policy will now apply every year.

The normal return conditions still apply. Last season, CBS News noted that perishables, customized items and “final sale” products were excluded, and that some returns carry a fee unless you use a free drop-off option, such as label-free returns at participating stores.

Before you buy: check the “Return policy” line on the product page. Items from sellers that ship their own orders can have different rules.

Walmart holiday return policy 2026

Walmart’s holiday window starts earlier than most. According to local news coverage of the updated policy, most items bought between October 1 and December 31, 2026, in store or online, can be returned through January 31, 2027. That includes eligible electronics, which normally have a 30-day window.

Watch for exceptions. The same report lists possible exceptions including wireless phones, protection plans, major appliances, Dyson products, and some seasonal, luxury and food items. Items from third-party Marketplace sellers follow each seller’s own policy, and last year CBS News reported Marketplace items weren’t covered by the extension.

Before you buy: on Walmart.com, check whether an item says “Sold and shipped by Walmart.” If it’s from a Marketplace seller, read that seller’s return terms.

Target, Best Buy and Apple: what to expect

These stores hadn’t published their 2026 holiday terms when we last checked. Here’s what they did last season, which is a reasonable guide until they announce:

  • Target (2025): items bought November 1 to December 24 got extended deadlines. Electronics, entertainment and most Target Plus items could be returned until January 24. Apple, Beats and mobile phones had to go back by January 8. Most other new, unopened items follow Target’s standard 90-day window anyway.
  • Best Buy (2025): items bought October 31 to December 31 could be returned until January 15. Phones and tablets bought with carrier activation contracts were excluded, and CBS News noted a possible 15% restocking fee on some opened items.
  • Apple Store (2025): items received November 8 to December 25 could be returned until January 8. Outside the holiday window, Apple’s standard return period is 14 days.

Before you buy: if you’re buying tech early in November, ask whether the holiday window applies on the day you buy. Some windows start in November, not October.

Watch out for return fees

An extended deadline doesn’t mean a free return. Last season, CBS News reported mail-in return fees at several retailers, including Macy’s ($9.99 for mailed returns, waived for free Star Rewards members), J.Crew ($7.50 for a prepaid label), Zara ($4.95 per return request) and Dillard’s ($9.95 label fee, plus a restocking fee). These fees usually come out of your refund.

The easy fix: return in store, or use the retailer’s free drop-off option where one exists.

How to make holiday returns painless

  1. Ask for gift receipts at checkout. They let the recipient return or exchange without seeing the price, and usually get store credit at the price you paid.
  2. Keep the packaging until after the holiday. Many stores require items in original packaging, especially electronics.
  3. Screenshot your order confirmations. Put them in one folder or email label so you can find them in January.
  4. Put the earliest deadline in your calendar. For Apple products and phones, that can be early January, not the end of the month.
  5. Check price adjustments. If an item drops in price soon after you buy, some retailers will refund the difference within a short window. It can be easier than returning and rebuying. Our price tracker comparison shows you how to catch a drop.

Mistakes to avoid

  • Assuming every item gets the extension. Phones, Apple products, protection plans and big appliances often have shorter or no extended windows.
  • Forgetting Marketplace sellers. On Amazon and Walmart, third-party sellers can have their own rules.
  • Opening tech you might return. Opened electronics can carry restocking fees at some stores.
  • Waiting until the last week of January. Lines are long and deadlines are strict. Return early if you already know it’s going back.
